Messrs. H. Holderness and H. W. Harris have been elected, subject to their consent, directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. An announcement by the chairman of the Wanganui Collegiate School Board of Trustees, Mr. G. W. Currie, that the headmaster, Mr. F. W. Gilligan, had consented to remain at the school for at least another term of five years was greeted with prolonged applause at the annual prize-giving ceremony. His term was due to expire on December 31, 1940. Mr. Gilbert Edward Fownes, a 'wellknown Wellington business man, died in hospital at Wellington on Saturday, after a short illness. He was 76 years old. After several years with the Union Clothing Company he became manager of a well-known Wellington shop, The Hat Box, Manners Street. In 1908 he set up in business on his own account at Newtown, founding the successful drapery house which bears his name and is today managed by his son.
