The Rev Father W. E. Ryan, Hamilton, has been appointed to take charge of the Catholic Institute at the Papakura military camp. The Hon Adam Hamilton. Minister without portfolio in the War Cabinet, returned to Wellington yesterday by steamer express from the south. The funeral of the late Mrs T. G. Hoar took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, there being a large attendance of mourners. The Rev H. S. Kings; assisted by the Rev F. J. Parker, officiated at the residence and •Mr Kings at the graveside. Among the many wreaths was one from the Red Star Cricket Club. Messrs K. Hoar, W. H. Saunders, W. Percy and F. Rutter were the pall-bearers. The Rev D. M. Hercus, who has been appointed chaplain to, and a member of the staff of Scots College, Wellington, is a son of the Rev R. J. D. Hercus, of the Christchurch Boys’ High School. He was ordained in 1931, and his first church was Brooklyn. He is at present-'in charge of a parish in Marlborough, is a member of the Board of Governors of Marlborough College, and Moderator of the Presbytery of' Nelson-Marlborough. Advice has been received of the death in Melbourne of Mr G. W. W. B. Hughes, formerly national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in New Zealand. Mr Hughes, during the Great War, went to England as supervising secretary of the Y.M.C.A. activities witn the New Zealand troops there in France. He returned to the Dominion after the war and was appointed national secretary. In 1919 he went to Australia to take up the appointment of general secretary, and control of the modern Y.M.C.A. building erected in Melbourne. He held this position till his death.

The death has occurred of Mr James Smith Macarthur, who was till earlier in the year managing director and chairman of the Dental and Medical Supplies Company, Ltd., Wellington. Born in Dunedin 67 years ago, Mr Macarthur was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School. He entered the Colonial Bank and was with that bank and the Bank of New Zealand for 12 years, but left banking in 1903 to join the New Zealand Consolidated Dental Company, Ltd., which later became the Dental and Medical Supplies Company. He was secretary of the company for nine years and then became general manager in 1912. In 1916 he became a member of the board as managing director, and in 1922 he was elected chairman of directors as well. He held both offices till he retired last May. Mr. Macarthur was also on the boards of directors of the Victoria Laundry, Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., and the Golden Bay Cement Company. The late Mr Macarthur was a brother of Mrs G. Reynolds, “Mayfields,” East Taratahi.
