STREET APPEAL

MARRED BY HEAVY RAIN NET TAKINGS ALMOST £6O. £1.000,000 PATRIOTIC FUND CAMPAIGN. Heavy rain, welcome as it was by gardeners whose hosing is at present restricted, marred the success of the street appeal in Masterton last night in furtherance of the £1,000,000 patriotic fund campaign. As a result the net takings amounted to only £59, 2s 7d and many of those running the “chocolate wheels,” not to mention the public* were well drenched before they reached home. Three “chocolate wheels” were in operation in Queen Street, from which traffic had been excluded, and business was reported to be particularly brisk when the rain set in. Had it not been for the change in the weather, the net takings would have been well over £lOO. Both the Municipal Band and Wairarapa College Pipe Band were in attendance and played acceptable selections. Ihe sale of tickets for Christmas cakes proved very popular. The winner of .an iced cake raffled last night was ticket number 4.1,339, — Kelly. Bannister Street. Incidentally, yesterday was toe 13th and one lady, throwing superstition to the winds, insisted on taking number 13 when participating in the chocolate wheql.’ She was successful on three occasions.

A few small returns have still to be received.
