CALVES AND LAMBS

GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNUAL DISPLAY AT CARTERTON. LIST OF AWARDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual champion of champions school calf and lamb clubs’ show war held on the Carterton Showgrounds yesterday and was a pronounced success. The competition was between various school calf and lamb groups from Kopuaranga in the north to Lake Ferry in the south. There was a large entry of splendid calves, both grade? and purebreds, and the class of animal exhibited was decidedly the best brought forward by the children who are to be complimented upon the very high class animals shown. The condition of the animals was favourably commented on by the judges who had a difficult task in making their awards. There was a large attendance of farmers and visitors, including Messrs G. Wild (Education Board Inspector). Colonel McDonald and Mr A. Donald (members of the Wellington Education Board). Mr H. A. Hesse (supervisor of Agricultural Instruction for the Wellington Education Board) and Mr F. C. Brockett (Agricultural Instructor). The judging was carried out by Mr V. L. Robinson (lambs). Mr D. Leach. Tuhitarata, Martinborough (pedigree calves) and Mr V. Gates (grade classes). The secretary. Mr Eric L. Rayner, the chairman. Mr L. A. Keats, of Mount Bruce, and other officials worked hard to make the competitions the success they were. LAMBS.

The lamb awards were: White face or longwool: Jeoffrey Grigson (Parkvale) 1; Betty Grigson (Parkvale) 2; June Rayner (Clareville) 3. Six entries. Black face: Doris Blandford (South Featherston) 1; Noel Jensen (Waihakeke) 2; Mary Blandford (South Featherston) 3. There were eight entries. CALVES. Grade Jersey class, judged on dairy type: Delma Jensen (Waihakeke) 1; Lewars Allen (West Taratahi) 2; Netta Pope (Kahutara) 3; Clifford Howard (Parkvale) 4. Sixteen entries. Care and handling, all grades: Lola Blandford (South Featherston) 1; Delma Jensen (Waihakeke) 2; Norma Blandford (South Featherston) 3. Twenty-one entries. Pedigree calves, rearing and handling: Pat Jensen (Waihakeke) 1; Declan Ness (Kahutara) 2; Annette Fairbrother (Dalefield) 3; Trevor James (Waihakeke) 4. Eleven entries.

Grade Ayrshires. dairy type: Norma Blandford (South Featherston) 1; Lola Blandford (South Featherston) 2: Nancy Daysh (West Taratahi) 3. Four entries.

All other grades: Noreen Conwell (Dalefield) 1; Harold Theobald (Martinborough) 2. Pedigree calves, dairy type: Trevor James (Waihakeke), Jersey, 1 and champion; Declan Ness (Kahutara) 2; Molly McGillicuddy (Dyerville) 3; Annette Fairbrother (Dalefield) 4. Eleven entries.

Grade dairy type: Delma Jensen (Waihakeke) 1 and champion; Norma Conwell (Dalefield) 2; Norma Blandford (South Featherston) 3.

Champion calf: Trevor James (Waihakeke 1 and champion. Delma Jensen (Waihakeke) 2. Mr L. A. Keats congratulated the children on the condition in which they had brought their calves and lambs to the show. He said that the competitions had been outstanding and the animals exhibited were a great credit to the children. He asked the children to take still more interest in their calf and lamb clubs. He thanked the secretary, Mr Rayner, and all who had assisted at the competitions and the visitors for their attendance. A special vote of thanks which was carried by acclamation was accorded to the judges.

Messrs F. C. Brockett and H. A. Hessey congratulated the children upon the splendid exhibits. Mr Hessey expressed his appreciation to the farmers of the Wairarapa for the interest they were displaying in the school calf and lamb clubs.

Cups for the competitions were awarded in the various classes, each carrying with it a miniature which L* retained by the winning exhibitor in each class. Diplomas were also issued to all competitors who have not already obtained one, and attached to these diplomas are shield seals award--ed for first, second and third prizes.
