COUNTY WORK

CONTINUING IN SPITE OF WAR. At the last meeting of the Masterton County Council for the present year held in the Council Chambers, Masterton, yesterday the chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, extended seasonal greetings to councillors, the executive, office and outside staffs and the Press. “The worst feature of this, our Centennial year, is that we are still at war,” observed Mr Lee. During the’ last twelve months rapid changes had taken place, and in the months to come all hoped for the best. Extensive bridge building works had been carried out and another loan had been arranged to continue the work. Mr Lee said that he hoped the council would be able to carry on with its programme. In conclusion he referred to the good relationship which had existed among councillors during the year. Replying on behalf of councillors, Mr G. Moore stated that the Taueru rivetbridge, which was near completion, had a span of 105 feet, which was the longest of its kind in New Zealand. He gave that as an instance of the extensive works that had been undertaken.

Mr J. C. D. Mackley, County Clerk, reciprocated the chairman’s greetings on behalf of the staff, stating that the council could be assured of the loyal and continued support of the staff. Mr H. Pavitt replied on behalf of the engineers.
