PATRIOTIC EFFORT
PRUNUS PLUMS PICKED. FRUIT TO BE SOLD IN WELLINGTON. As a patriotic effort the secretary of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. (Mr C. W. Gaze) and a team of boys picked plums off the prunus trees in the avenue in Miriam and Archer streets, last night. As the result of two hours' work eleven cases of plums were gathered, with the permission of the Masterton Beautifying Society. Residents of the streets who take a pride and interest in the trees were rather concerned when a lorry passed from tree to tree and saw boys on the back of the lorry picking the fruit, as many make good use of the plums. However, the effort was made on behalf of the patriotic appeal, and it is understood that a further picking will be made later.
Mr Alex Young, who provided the lorry, has arranged for the free transport of the fruit to the Wellington markets and endeavours are being macle to have the fruit auctioned free of cost.
