SOLWAY COLLEGE
EXCELLENT CONCERT BY PUPILS DELIGHTFUL PIANOFORTE ITEMS. OUTSTANDING ORCHESTRAL WORK. There was the largest audience on record at the annual concert given by the pupils of Solway College in their assembly hall on Monday evening. It was an interesting and varied entertainment of pianoforte and orchestral items, choir and chorus and singing, concluding with a one-act drama “A Room, in the Tower,” in which the characters of Lady Jane Grey and Mary Tudor and two waiting women were feelingly rendered by Patricia Blamires. Nola Dockery. Margaret Robins and Suzette Millar. The rendering of the play reflected credit on the elocution teacher, Miss Elizabeth Thomas.
The pianoforte items were delightful, some of the work being outstanding, notably that of Patricia Blamires and Joyce Eyre, both of whom revealed a musicianship beyond their years. An interesting feature of the concert was the orchestral work which has been under the supervision of Mr. Leon De
Mauny, and Mr. Claud Tanner, of Wellington. The work of the small orchestra was far in advance of anything that has yet been heard at the school. But perhaps the artistic and refreshing singing of lhe choir contributed most of all to the evening’s enjoyment. The fresh young voices artistically trained were heard to advantage under the conductorship of Mesdames Pinkney and Williams. The following was the programme: Pianoforte solos: —"The Happy Hunter” (Harold Craxton), Margaret Cave; "Grandmother’s Minuet” (Grieg), Joan Couling "River Magic” (Dorothy Pilling), Heather Macdonald. Violoncello j solo, “Song Without Words,” Diana Coleman.
