Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., and Mrs. Robertson were among those present at the children’s gala day in the Masterton Park on Saturday. Mr. C. D. C. Caswell, late, of the Church Army, was recently ordained to the deaconate by Archbishop WestWatson in Christchurch Cathedral. The death has occurred in England of the Rev. Walter George Juens, formerly of New Zealand, who was connected for forty years with the work of the Church of England in Melanesia. In the recently-conducted electrical wiremen’s examination Mr. M. M. Stevens (Masterton) passed in the practical part of the test while in the examination for electrical servicemen Mr. M. N. Hardie (Masterton) passed in the written part. Lieutenant-Colonel W. W. Jefferd, who has been in command of the First Battalion, Hawke's Bay Regiment, which is in camp on Dannevirke Showgrounds, on Saturday officially severed his connection with the battalion to take up another army appointment. Major Nolan, who has been second in command, has been appointed officer in command of the battalion.

The funeral of the late Mrs J. Carter, of Masterton, took place this morning, the service at the residence and that at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. David McNeur. Wreaths were sent by the W.C.T.U., Lansdowne Ladies’ Guild, P.W.M.U., and Lansdowne Presbyterian Sunday School. The pallbearers were Messrs J. E., G., and James Carter and H. Leighton.

The funeral of the late Mr E. J. Cockerill, of Upper Plain, took place on Saturday, there' being a representative attendance of mourners. The Rev. V. W. Joblin officiated at the residence and at the Masterton Cemetery. ’Messrs W. Pottinger, L. W. Hickling, E. Woodley, B. lorns, A. Young, and R. W. Christopherson were the pallbearers.

The death has occurred at Christchurch at Mr. Richard Frederick Wallis, aged 80, says a Press Association telegram from Gore. Mr. Wallis was one of the best-known men in the wool and frozen meat trade in Southern New Zealand. An old identity of Gore, he had a splendid record in the early days as an athlete. For many years he was connected with the Gore Fire Brigade, the Gore Racing Club, and the Gore Trotting Club.

By the death on Saturday of Mrs. Kirk, wife of Lieutenant-Colonel A. Kirk, of the Salvation Army, that organisation loses one who has been one of its most enthusiastic and energetic workers over a long period. Mrs. Kirk who was 73 years old, began her work with the Army in 1884 as Captain Perry, and therefore was one of the earliest women officers of the movement in New Zealand. Apart from her work for the Salvation Army, Mrs. Kirk took a lively interest in the work of other branches of the Christian church, including the conduct of bible lessons in schools. For some years she took a class in the Kelburn School, and was much encouraged from time to time by her former pupils who called on her to assure her how helpful her ministrations had been. As chaplain, Mrs. Kirk also conducted a monthly spiritual meeting with the aged and retired officers of the Salvation Army in Wellington. She leaves a family of one daughter anckfour sons —Miss Ida Kirk, MastertonpMessrs. Alan Kirk, Wellington; Gordon Kirk, Nelson; Malcolm Kirk, Auckland; and Athol Kirk, Motueka.
