PIRINOA

TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING GF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Pirinoa Tennis Club was held on Wednesday, Mr N. Hume presiding over a large attendance of members. As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr R. McDougall, who was a staunch supporter of. the club, a motion of condolence with the relatives was carried in silence. The secretary (Mr S. Thomas) submitted the annual report and balance sheet which showed the club to be In a sound financial position. Although the club ended its season’s activities with a small debit, the position as revealed by the balance sheet was considered most satisfactory. The competition for the McDougall Shield (best two out of three matches) with Kahutara had been considerably marred by bad weather, and two of the matches, although greatly in favour of the local club, had to be abandoned. The shield was at present held by Kahutara. It was decided to play the first series of matches for the shield on December 16. It was reported that the Swanson Cup (doubles competition) had been won by Messrs B. McMaster and M. Herangi, and that the club championship had been won by S. Thomas. The ladies’ championship was unfinished owing to the difficulty in getting the members together. It was decided to dispense with the official opening day tournament, and the giving of trophies for competition, as it was deemed necessary to exercise economy. It was pointed out that the club membership had dropped considerably owing to oversea enlistments and the fact that others had left the district. It was hoped, however, that new members would fill the places of those who are not now available. The prospects for the new season appear to be good. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr F. Lovegrove; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Thomas; club captain. Mr S. Thomas; committee, Mrs Tikao and Miss J. Lovegrove and Messrs N. Hume, G. Munro and J. Sutton. The subscription was fixed as follows:—Men, 7s 6d; ladies, ss; members under 16, 2s 6d.

Called up for Service. Among those called up for service overseas appears the names of Messrs W. Charteris, C. E. Todd, J. T. Duggan, E. Vaughan and L. Robinson of pirinoa. Home Guard. The first parade of the newly-form-ed Home Guard was held on Wednesday evening. Mr Wright, leader of the Martinborough branch, was present. A part of the evening was taken up in attesting new members. There was an attendance of forty members, and it is hoped to get further enrolments before the next parade. Personal Items. Miss Olive West is undergoing treatment at the Masterton Hospital. The many friends of. Mr J., A. McDougall will be pleased to know that he is greatly improved in health and hopes to be about again shortly. Mr Duncan Didsbury is visiting Auckland where his brother, Mr Colin Didsbury, is a member of the Air Force.

Miss N. McDougall and her sister, Mrs Guy Didsbury, Wellington, are visiting Auckland. Mi- Martin Hume will enter the Air Force training school at Weraroa within the next few days. Mrs Matakatea. who has been in hospital has returned home. Shearing Operations. i Favoured by beautiful weather shearing has progressed considerably in this district during the past fortnight.
