INTERHOUSE GIRLS
CHRISTMAS PARTY GATHERING IN Y.M.C.A. RAFFLE WON BY AIR FORCE MEMBER. Over 130 girls were the guests of the committee of the Wairarapa Interhouse Association at an enjoyable Christmas party held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Wednesday. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, coaches of The teams, and wives of the committee members were also present. Several items by the Interhouse Choir led by Mrs Miller Hope opened the proceedings and were followed by songs by Miss Fulton and tap exhibitions by Miss Dulcie George, of Carterton, and Miss Olga Currie, of Masterton. An impromptu ballet by Miss E. Thompson’s troupe was given a hearty encore and was followed by a mandolin solo by Miss Beale. Great excitement was caused when a tug-of-war was interrupted by the unexpected entry of a “wild steer,” whose antics caused roars of mirth until the “beast” was finally lassooed and led away. It is understood that the same animal will probably break away on Saturday afternoon next and endeavours will be made to recapture it at the Park Oval. Community singing accompanied the serving of supper by the members of the committee.
The event of the evening was the entry of Father Christmas, who distributed a gift from his laden sack to every member of the Interhouse teams and choir. The Mayor was the recipient of a cheque for £2O, being the first instalment of the association’s contribution to the £1,000,000 Appeal. A special gift was handed to Mr Hayden in appreciation of his excellent work for the association in the running of its gala day. The drawing of a raffle for a gold watch resulted in a win for Mr S. Brannigan (coach of J. R. McKenzie’s team), who has just entered camp with the Air Force. In a brief speech the Mayor congratulated the Interhouse Association on their excellent gala day and expressed his appreciation of the appearance and turnout of the teams. He concluded with an appeal for contributions to the Patriotic Funds. Posies were handed to Miss Noeline Thompson, district recreation officer, in appreciation of her organisation of the massed drill, and to Mrs Miller Hope, leader of the choir. Community singing and old-time dancing brought a most enjoyable gathering to a close.
