WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
SOLWAY-M ANAIA MEETING. COMPETITION WINNERS. The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women’s Institute was held in the Church of the Epiphany Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mrs K. McGovern presided over a large attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Catherall Senr., Catherall Junr., Scrivener, Munn and Lepper. Four singlets and two jumpers that had been knitted by members for the Lady Galway Fund were handed in. A. very interesting talk on Braille was given by Mrs Kerry, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A bring and buy stall is to be held in February. The competitions for February will be: —Cooking: One jar each of jam, jelly and preserved fruit; sewing, a child’s frock; flowers, best flower and decorated vase. The height of the vase is limited to twelve inches. Roll call, “Embarrassing Moment Caused by a Child.” The hostesses for February will be: Mesdames Catton, Cornick. Catherall Senr., and Catherall Junr. The competitions resulted as follows: —Best Christmas cake: Mrs G. Allan, 1; Mrs Henderson, 2. Best flower: Mrs Catton, 1; Mrs Carr, 2. Sweet peas: Mrs Scrivener, 1; Mrs Allan, 2. Christmas lilies: Mrs Scrivener, 1; Mrs Woollett, 2. Christmas novelties: Mrs Carr and Mrs Russell (equal), 1; Mrs Groombridge and Miss Russell (equal), 2. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
