ALFREDTON

PATRIOTIC SOCIETY CARD PARTY WINNERS. ("Times-Age" Special.) The fortnightly card party organised by the Patriotic Society held on Saturday evening vzas not so largely attended as usual. The takings amounted to £6 2s 9d. The winners of the cards were: — Ladies, Mrs R Low 1, Mesdames Weston, Dickens, Rolls and F. McLean (tie) 2. Mrs Dickens won the draw. Men: Mr G. Godinagh 1, Mr V. Payne 2. The box of soap given by Mrs Seymour was won by Mr R. Low. The breakfast tray donated by Messrs Herbert and Co. was won by Mr K. MacDonald. Lettuce and cabbage plants donated by Mrs V. Payne realised 8s 6d. The total reached in the local “Heart-to-Heart” Appeal to date is £305 7s 6d. Mr R. W. Kebbell, chairman of the Patriotic Society, announced that opportunity had been taken to present Air-Pilot Hylton George with a wristlet watch, together with a letter expressing the good wishes of the people of the district. Mr Kebbell referred to the keen interest Air-Pilot George had taken in the sporting activities of the district, and the prominent part he had always played. In his fust year at Scots College he had been chosen to represent the college in the inter-collegiate sports and had been the only boy from that school so honoured that year. Unfortunately Air-Pilot George had been unable to attend and in his absence those present accorded him musical honours. The hostesses were Mrs T. Smith and Misses K. Smith and J. Algie. Personal Items. Mrs S. M. George motored to Hastings last week, to visit her sister. Mr J. Spring, of Nireaha, returned from Opunake at the weekend. Mr Spring, who has been spending a holiday with his son. Mr P. Spring, was accompanied by Mr and Mrs M. Spring, Waitara.
