GREYTOWN
WOMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The Greytown Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held the last meeting for the year on Wednesday afternoon in the Parish Hall. Mrs Beu presided over a good attendance ol members. The meeting opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem and Prayer for Peace. Mrs Beu asked members to stand for a few moments in sympathy with Mesdames A. Johnson, M. Thompson and T. Orr, who suffered bereavement recently, and also Mrs Pink of Carterton. A letter was received from Miss Kidd expressing thanks for the kindness and interest taken in her by members while in hospital. A letter of appreciation was also received from Mrs T. Orr. Mrs Beu drew attention to the Women’s Division Flower Show to be held in Carterton on Friday, December 6. An invitation was extended to members of the Greytown branch to attend at the Masonic Hall on that date. A letter was read concerning a garden party to be held at the Women’s Division’s Rest Home. Awapuni. A letter was read from the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, London, asking for knitted articles such as scarves, gloves, blankets and cushion covers. It was decided to send a pair of grey single bed blankets from the Greytown branch. Articles or parcels may be left at Mr H. G. Carter’s shop, Main Street, by December 6 in preparation for sending by December 10. The president, Mrs Beu, will also receive goods. Mrs A. Johnson thanked the president, secretary and treasurer and members for the kindness shown to her while in hospital. Mrs Beu thanked Mrs Benseman, the hospital visitor, for the good work she continued to do. She also expressed thanks to the secretary and treasurer and members for their cooperation and attendance during the year, and wished them a happy Christmas and a pleasant holiday period. Mrs A. W. Horton (Mayoress) reciprocated Mrs Beu’s remarks and wished all present a happy period at Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The hostesses were Mesdames Wiggins, Benseman, Nicholson and Hodge, Senr. The meeting closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
CROQUET HORTON BUTTONS. Playing for the Horton Buttons, Mesdames Gregor and Reid were defeated by Mesdames Haigh and Maddison, 26/17. . The half-hour tournament arranged for Saturday afternoon has been postponed owing to it clashing with Mrs A. Johnson’s garden party. HOME GUARD ENROLMENTS AT MORISON’S BUSH. There was an excellent response at Morison’s Bush last night when the committee of the Greytown District Home Guard attended the Morison’s Bush Hall to enrol members for the Home Guard. Mr T. G. R. Ingley occupied the chair, and in introducing the speakers, stated that Morison’s Bush would fully support the scheme. Messrs Dewhurst and Carter outlined the proposed programme. Thirty members were enrolled and it was reported that more are to come in. Bowling. The following Greytown bowlers will play against Carterton at Carterton on Saturday:— Booth Cup: Connolly, Shedden, Kenning, Higgison; Brunton, Curtis, Kilgour, McLeod. Shield: Reid, Robinson, Dennes, Carter; Skeet, Cate. Nightingale, Bunny; Day, Bloomfield, Burden, Kiernan. For the Dennes Medal. H. B. Wallace defeated J. Burden by a narrow margin. He was then challenged by G. Brunton. Wallace again played consistent bowls and won. In the Gold Bars, Carter and Higgison scored another win from Brunton and Kilgour.
