CARTERTON
WOMEN’S DIVISION . SOCIAL CLUB CONCERT. ("Times-Age" Special.) Members of the Social Club of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, presented an excellent programme of items in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, last evening to a large and appreciative audience. Mrs D. Walsh, president of the Social Club, presided, and before commencing the programme extended a welcome to those present. She said that the club members were pleased to see such a large attendance. The concert had been arranged to assist the "Heart-to-Heart” Appeal, and it was hoped to be able to help this cause, even if only in a small way. She said that she hoped everyone would enjoy the programme and go away well satisfied. The items were well received and warmly applauded. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames K. Reid and V. L. Robinson. At the close of the concert Mrs Walsh said that she had a pleasant duty to perform and that was to make Mrs K. Reid a presentation. She stated that if they did not have Mrs Reid they would not have a Social Club, and she asked Mrs Reid to accept a present from the Club, and also a very beautiful shoulder spray. All joined in singing "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mrs Walsh also presented a shoulder spray to Mrs Peters in appreciation of the assistance rendered in many ways. Mrs Corbett presented shoulder sprays to Mrs Rabbitts, Mrs H. E. Ordish and Mrs Walsh, followed by the singing of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” During the singing of the last item, a Union Jack was spread on the stage and coins'of all kinds were thrown on to it. The programme was as follows: — Opening chorus, New Zealand National Anthem and old fashioned songs by the Social Club choir; dialogue, “Weather House,” June and Peggy Daysh; apple song, Social Club; menu competition; playette, "Acid Drops,” the characters being taken by Mesdames Stretton, Mellish, O’Keefe, Hodder. Linton, Harrington and Reid; children’s game; song, Misses Mellish; playette, “Marriage Disarranged,” the characters being taken by Mesdames Ewington, Hodder, Peters, Corbett, O’Keefe, McLean and Misses Carter and Abbott; “There’ll Always be an England,” Clareville children, the solo being taken by Miss Card; “Nursie, Nursie,” Mesdames Hodder and Linton. Supper- was dispensed and the hall cleared for dancing. Mrs Rogers supplying the music free of charge. The function realised £5. /
BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS. The first matches in the Carterton Bowling Club’s competitions were played last evening and resulted as under:— Champion singles: Barber beat Barr, 17/12; Sorensen beat A. Thompson, 19/10. Champion pairs: Callender and Martin (s) beat G. Hart and Harp (s), 25/16; Harrington and R. Thompson (s) beat Stent and DeLacey (s), 29/10. Handicap pairs: E. Clark and Harrington (s) beat R. Daysh and Riggs (s). 26/15; Daysh and Tucker (s) beat A. Clark and Hughan (s), 26/24. CLAREVILLE SCHOOL CALF CLUB COMPETITIONS. There was a large attendance at the Clareville School grounds yesterday when the School Calf Club held its annual competitions which were the best yet held. The entries both in calves and lambs were large. The quality of the stock was favourably commented upon by the judge, Mr Max Rose, of Parkvale, who complimented the children upon the fine condition of their exhibits. Besides the calf competition the children attending the school held an exhibition of cooking and an arts and crafts competition. Mrs E. W. Allen judged the former and Mrs Jas. Fisher the latter. At the conclusion of the judging Mr Jas. Fisher, chairman of the school committee, thanked the judges for their assistance and complimented the children upon the condition of their calves and lambs. Jean Daken 1; Nola Humphries 2; Raeburn Reid 3. Standard III: Jim Daysh 1; K. Reid 2; June Daken 3. Standards 1 and 2: Ken Nicholls 1; Basel Beu 2; Arthur Spicer 3. Primer classes: Iris Edwards 1; Colin Nicholls 2; Christine Daken 3. Soldiers Entertained. A pleasant time was spent in St. Mary’s Hall last evening when Sappers Maurice Meyer and Mark Meyer were entertained by members of the Holy Name Society and the Hibernian Club of St. Mary's, Carterton. There was a large attendance. Musical and vocal items were contributed by Mrs F. Curry, Miss Pat Upritchard. Mr Goulden. and a tap dance by Misses Thelma Lane and Ava Sorensen. During the evening the Rev. Father Devlin, on behalf of the two societies
concerned, made a presentation of a pocket wallet to each of the guests. Both recipients returned their thanks for the kindly words expressed and for the handsome present. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Miss Mary Herrick, extras being played by Miss Jean Lorenzen and Mr John Burton. Miss Nola Clark, of Masterton. played the accompaniments for the musical items. Mr W. Bird was an efficient M.C. A pleasant gathering terminated with the singing of the National Anthem and Auld Lang Syne. Entertainment of Soldiers. At the King's Theatre, Carterton, tonight the citizens of Carterton will tender a social to several soldiers. Items will be given during the evening by members of (he Girls' Club. The speakers will be Mr D. L. Taverner, Mayor of Carterton, Mr Ben Roberts, member for the district, and Mr A. T. Murray, chairman of the R.S.A. Card Party. A card party held under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union was well attended and a most enjoyable time was spent. The card winners were:—Ladies: Mrs M. Parker, 1; Mrs J. Finn. 2. Men: Mr W. Ticehurst. 1; Mr Hollings, 2. Supper was provided. At an interval in the proceedings,
Mrs P. Hodder presented Privates Benge, Ray Hodder and Wiley with a parcel of soldiers’ woollies. The recipients suitably replied. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi on Sunday at 2 p.m.
