IRON GUARD MURDERS
ANARCHY DEVELOPING IN RUMANIA ANTONESCU THINKING OF RESIGNING. PROFESSOR JORGA THE LATEST VICTIM. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) BUCHAREST, November 28. General Antonescu has issued a decree providing death penalties for wilful murder, and for robbery if over £l,OOO is involved. The decree, which was hastened to cover any future attempts by unauthorised persons to take the law into their own hands, also provides a penalty of 5 to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour for kidnapping or breaking into private, premises. M. Madgearu was shot dead near Bucharest. The Associated Press of Great Britain Budapest correspondent says General Antonescu is struggling to check the anarchy developing. He is reported to be considering resignation if the legionaries are not restrained. A reign of terror exists in Bucharest. ..Despite the leader’s plea for order, M. Bratianu, former leader of the Liberals and M. Amandi, former Minister of Justice, may also be murdered. The legionaries are a rebellious wing in the Iron Guard. lon Codreanu may be leader of the wing. Its members include a number of priests.
The legionaries themselves informed the police of the executions, but none were detained, not even for questioning. They dumped the bodies of their victims in the prison grave from which the bones of members of the Iron Guard had previously been taken. Bands of Green Shirts" have driven Jews from their shops and synagogues in Braila. All public buildings in Bucharest are being heavily guarded and troops aie patrolling the streets. The Berlin News Agency stated that legionaries yesterday took Professor Jorga, who was Rumanian Premier in 1931, from his house. His body was found on a road near Ploesti today, riddled with bullets. He once brought a libel action against Codreanu.
MILD DENUNCIATION IN ITALIAN NEWSPAPER. (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) ROME, November 28. The “Popolo Di Roma” described the Bucharest executions as unjustified lynching and added that the action was not legal and was contrary io General Antonescu's political tendencies.
