STORM IN AUCKLAND
WATERFRONT WORK HELD UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 18. The worst cyclonic storm since last summer, which swept Auckland during the weekend, eased today with the passing of the centre of the disturbance. So far no flooding has been reported in the province. The worst feature of the storm was the howling north-easterly winds. The rainfall was comparatively light. Yesterday the storm proved costly to shipping companies in Auckland. About 500 watersiders had been engaged at treble rates for Sunday work, amounting to 7s. an hour, plus 5 per cent., for a minimum of eight hours. When the men arrived it was impossible to open the hatches, and as the rain continued the ships remained idle throughout the day. The companies’ staffs were also engaged for the day at double rates. It is estimated that the total sum paid out in wages for the day were well over £l5OO. The resulting delays also involved the companies in additional costs.
All shipping resumed cargo operations this morning. A complete hold-up of waterside work for a day rare experience.
