“LAST CHANCE”
OFFERED BY JAPANESE TO CHIANG KAI-SHEK REPORTED PEACE OVERTURE. WASHINGTON REQUESTED NOT TO INTERFERE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) TOKIO, November 17. It is reliably reported that the Imperial Conference last Wednesday decided to give the Chungking Government a “last chance’’ to consider its attitude to Japan, upon which if it fails to reconsider within a certain period Japan will formally recognise the Wang Ching-wei Government. It is learned from an unimpeachable source that the Foreign Minister, Mr Matsuoka, informed the United States Ambassador, Mr Harry Grew, on November 11, that he personally is exhorting that contact should be made with General Chiang Kai-shek for a final offer, and it is understood that Mr Matsuoka has also requested Washington not to interfere in the peace attempt.
The Japanese withdrawal from the Nanning region in South China is now complete, the 8.8. C. reports. The Japanese assert that the withdrawal is voluntary and deny the Chinese claim that they had been driven out.
