Mr L. A. George has been elected president of the Wellington Drapers’ and Boot Retailers' Association. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Health, will return to Wellington from the south tomorrow morning. Major L. S. Rogers, R.A.M.C., recently of Te Awamutu, has been appointed surgical specialist to the York Military Hospital, the main permanent hospital of the Northern Command in Britain. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, returned today to Wellington from the north. This morning he unveiled a bronze plaque and tablet in honour of Professor H. B. Kirk in the biology block at Victoria University

College. Mr J. de V. VZ. Brathwayt has assumed charge of the Martinborough branch of Messrs Gawith, Biss and Wilson. Mr Brathwayt has been practising in Gisborne where he held the position of president of the Poverty Bay Law Society. The death has occurred of Mr Alfred Alexander Gower. Hawkstone Street, Wellington. Mr Gower celebrated his 84th birthday in October. Born in Wanganui in 1856, the son of a chemist, he served his time in that profession in Masterton. and went into business on his own account in New Plymouth, and later in Patea and Wanganui. Mr Gower went to Wellington 16 years ago, and conducted the Gower Pharmacy for some years. He took a keen interest in most public activities and sports. He was a member of the Wanganui City Council for some years. He was a life member of the Wanganui Bowling Club, and was one of the oldest members of the Thorndon Bowling Club. Mr Gower was a member of Lodge St. Andrew Kilwinning, Wanganui, and Lodge William Ferguson Massey, Wellington, and had founded the Patea Lodge. He was a past master of the 30 th degree. He was the oldest chemist remaining on the register of old chemists of New Zealand. In his younger days he took an active part in the affairs of the Church of England.
