MASTERTON COUNTY BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY’S MEETING. HIGHWAYS RENUMBERED. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was Held in the Council Chambers, Masterton. yesterday. The chairman. Mr R. E. Gordon Lee. presided. There were also present Councillors H. H. Mawley. W. I. Armstrong. J. W. Colquhoun. G. Moore. J. Donald and P. R. Welch. The Prime Minister. Mr P. Fraser, wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s letter of October 11 conveying its resolution in reference to the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill. The council's views had been noted and would receive consideration. Mr J. Robertson. M.P.., wrote stating that he would give full consideration to the council’s representations in opposition to the Bill, as also to those of the numerous merchants in the Masterton electorate who had asked him to support the Bill. The letters were received. The Commissioner of Transport wrote forwarding a copy of the Motor Vehicle Emergency Regulations, which explained that the concession of heavy traffic fees for farmers’ trucks applied to (a) tractors and trailers used in the same way as a farmer’s truck, with the provision that each individual vehicle should not exceed 5 tons in weight; (b) to a farmer’s truck used for transporting his neighbour’s milk or whey to a dairy factory.

The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote conveying his appreciation to the council for its offer of combined co-operation with regard to the child refugee scheme. Advice was received from the District Engineer, Public Works Department, that, as some confusion had arisen under the highway system (where part of a Main Highway was classified as a State Highway and the remaining portion of highway was generally given another name) several Main Highways had been renumbered. The Masterton-Weber, Mas-terton-Castlepoint, Masterton-Stronvar and Martinborough-Masterton highways had been renumbered 816. 835, 836 and 861. respectively. The chief engineer of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board forwarded plans showing the extension of the power line to the Kopuaranga district. The plan showed the pole positions, and the board wished to know if the line interfered with the council’s future road work.

Mr Mackley reported that the overseer had gone over the line. It was decided to write to the Power Board agreeing to the line being taken where stated.

The secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ Association advised that £520 had been raised for the London Relief Fund, representing donations of £lO by 52 counties.

The clerk reported that a reply in connection with the proposals for the construction of a stop-bank to minimise flooding over the Matahiwi road, which were submitted to the Public Works Department for approval on October 3, had not yet been received. The ranger reported having impounded 15 cattle, 2 horses and one goat.

Three notices of. sale of property within the county during the month were received by the clerk. The engineers’ report showed that the Wangaehu Stream bridge, the Mangapokia bridge at Blairlogie, and the Kiriwhakapapa bridge had been completed.

The overseer reported having carried out maintenance work in the various ridings.
