MARSHAL PETAIN’S REPLY TO MR ROOSEVELT PRESENTED BY AMBASSADOR. DETAILS NOT DISCLOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, November 4. The French Ambassador, M. Henry Haye, visited Mr Cordell Hull (Secretary of State) to give Marshal Petain’s reply to President Roosevelt’s recent personal message. The contents of the reply were not disclosed. Mr Hull, in a statement to the Press, said that French possessions in the Western Hemisphere were mentioned during his meeting with M. Haye, but he refused io elaborate. M. Haye told the Press that he had every reason to believe the United States does not intend to intervene at Martinique. He said he believed the reaction of Messrs Hull and Welles to Marshal Petain's Note would be satisfactory. Mr Hull said he had no information concerning the reports from EuTope that peace’ proposals had been outlined to the United States.
A 8.8. C. commentator said that although the contents of President Roosevelt's message to Marshal Petain had not been disclosed, it was believed that the President had given a plain warning that the United States would intervene if any attempt were made t'o transfer French possessions in the Western Hemisphere to another Power.
