HITLER AS GUY
DEPARTURE FROM TRADITION . THIS MORNING. In the early hours of this morning, Masterton’s young folk, of both sexes, toured the town with their “guys,” Hitler on this occasion being the model almost universally favoured. Various representations of Hitler rocked on trollies or bicycles or were carried in the arms of their owners. Some quite effective caricatures were achieved. A few children contented themselves with the traditional guy, but they were very much in the minority. In places, at least, there was a ready response to the children's appeal.- It is understood that, following the lead of the Lansdowne School, some of the collections will be handed over to the Junior Red Cross organisation. As a result of the Guy Fawkes collection by the pupils of the Lansdowne School, and activities by the various circles at the school over the past week, the sum of £5 5s will be handed over to the Provincial Patriotic Fund. Sums of between Is and 8s were handed to Mr E. G. Coddington, headmaster of Masterton Central School by fifteen pupils as the proceeds of the Guy Fawkes day collection this morning. The money is to be devoted to patriotic purposes.
