MARTINBOROUGH
TENNIS SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday afternoon, in favourable weather, the Martinborough Tennis Club courts were officially opened for the season. Mr J. Martin, in declaring the season open, reviewed the club's activities during the past year and made feeling reference to the death of their late president (Mrs W. J. Martin). . Miss M. C. Martin hoisted the flag amid cheers. Several new members were welcomed. A number of enjoyable games were played. SOLDIERS HONOURED NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS. On Friday night several local soldiers were entertained by residents, at a social and dance in the Town Hall. During an interval in the proceedings the Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill) stated that, the people of Martinborough were proud of the young men who were responding to the call of duty. He assured them that on their return they would be warmly welcomed and that every effort would be made to restore them to their civil occupations. Mr N. H. Thomas, president of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, assured the departing guests that the Returned Soldiers’ Association would do everything in their power to assist the local soldiers.
During the evening vocal items were rendered by Mesdames F. Boyd and E. R. Burch, a violin solo was given by Mr McLennan and piano-accordion selections by Miss Pryor. Each soldier was the recipient of a gift parcel.
