BRITISH SHIPPING

LOSSES AND NEW BUILDING. TRADE JOURNAL'S SURVEY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 1. The "Burnt Island Shipyard Journal," which is regarded as authoritative in Scottish shipbuilding circles, states that 396 British merchantmen totalling, 1,561,000 tons, were destroyed in the first year of the war. It is estimated that, in the same period, Allied and neutral countries lost 363 ships, totalling 1,235.000 tons. The enemy lost by capture, scuttling, or sinking 330 ships, totalling 1,300.000 tons, making the world total 1089 ships, totalling 4.096,000 tons. During the past few weeks the published British sinking averaged 13 ships of a total of 60.000 tons a week. If the British losses in the second year of the war do not exceed those of the first year, it should be well within the capacity of our shipyards to make the loss good.
