ENEMY RAIDERS
ACTIVE OVER WIDE AREA HEAVY ATTACK ON MIDLANDS TOWN. DAMAGE AND CASUALTIES (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, October 27. “Activity over Britain last night covered a wide area, though the main forces of attack were directed against London and the Midlands,” states an Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security communique. The attack began soon after nightfall, and though it lessened in intensity, it continued for some hours after midnight. In the London district, damage was done to houses and shops and a few fires were started. These, however, were soon extinguished or controlled and casualties were not heavy, though some people were killed. “A heavy attack was made on one town in the Midlands, where a large number of incendiary bombs were dropped, resulting in fires, some of which were serious, but were promptly dealt with by the fire services and are now under control. Damage to buildings was also caused in this area by high explosives and preliminary reports suggest that casualties were greater than in any previous attack on this town. “Attacks were also made in several places in South-Eastern England. Some fires were started and a house and shops damaged, but the damage was not heavy in the aggregate and casualties were low. “Elsewhere isolated attacks were made, but according to present reports the damage was not extensive and there were few casualties. “One enemy bombei- was destroyed during the night and it is now known that one more enemy aircraft was destroyed on the previous night.”
