WELLINGTON
TWO SURPRISE WINS. FINE DISPLAY BY SIR BEAU. ’ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. October 27. The Wanganui-owned and trained colt Sir Beau scored a decisive win in the Wellington Guineas at Trenthain on Saturday. It was the feature event on the programme for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. Surprises occurred in the two principal handicaps, the Watkins and the Awatea. The Ring won the former race and in the sprint Sir Crusoe brought off the surprise of the two days. Racing was held under fine weather conditions though the westerly wind Was cold, and the race track was in good order though not fast, having made a good recovery from the rain of Thursday and Friday. There was a very large attendance and the totalisator returns again soared. The total handled on the day was £80,024 10s (win £36,602; place £43,422 10s), compared with £64,306 on the second day last year, an increase of £15,718 10s. The total for the two days is £130,590 10s, an increase of £22,508. Only five ran in the hurdle race which was won well by the favourite. Recollection. Recollection lay in the rear early, the others cutting out a sound pace, but he went up from Lhe five furlongs and, joining Dorado and Great Fair at the second last fence, he led down to the last hurdle. Here he ran over and took Great Fair’s line and caused interference. Recollection then ran on to win nicely though Great Fair was closing up on him again at the end. Dorado was a good third, with a gap to Son and Heir. As the result of an inquiry into the interference at the last fence the judge’s placings wore reversed, Great Fair being placed first and Recollection second. A. Leach, the rider of Recollection, was suspended for a month. Results: — Rimu Hurdle Handicap, ljm: 2/4 Great Fair, 9.11 (S. Wright) P, 1/1 Recollection. 10.10 (A. Leach) 2; 3/2 Dorado, 10.3 (P.
