ALFREDTON

PATRIOTIC SOCIETY ENJOYABLE CARD PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Although the attendance was not as large as usual at the fortnightly card party held under the auspices of the Patriotic Society the takings amounted to £lO 16s. 6d. The committee wish to acknowledge a donation of £2O from Mr. George Higginson. The winners of the cards were: — Ladies: Mrs Didsbury, 1; Mesdames S. Edmonds and Harcombe, 2. The latter winning the draw. Men: Mr C. H. Hartley, 1. Messrs S. Edmonds and Woodbury 2, the former winning the draw. The winners receive tickets for the pictures. The sale of Howers and of seed potatoes (donated by Mr R. Kebbell) realised 14s. 6d. Various competitions brought in £2 55., and were won by the following. Towel rack (made and donated by Mr. A. Edmonds), Mrs Yarrall. Tea (donated by R. Kebbell), Mr J. A. Smith. Two fans (made and given by Mr Duckett) Miss Elsa Hansen. The box of chocolate competition (donor, Mr R. Kebbell) will be finalised at the next gathering. Eggs donated by Mrs Johnson were sold to Mr John McKay. Supper was served by Mesdames W. Rolls; S. Edwards and G. Yarrall: Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Manihera and daughter have been the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Hartley. Mr and Mrs C. Richards, of Wanganui, are the guests of Mr and Mrs G. Yarrall. Mr. Richards is enjoying some trout fishing. The friends of Messrs. A. Edmonds and Leo Duckett will regret to hear that they are patients in the Pahiatua Hospital. Mr M. Hull, who is also a patient in the hospital is reported to be progressing towards recovery. Mr and Mrs Holdaway have been visiting Wellington. Patriotic Effort. The ladies of the district have dispatched, to date, 43 pullovers, 30 scarves, 26 pairs mittens, 8 balaclavas. The new garments number 148, and they have renovated and remodelled three large sacks of clothing, which must be regarded as a very satisfactory effort.
