MORMON ELDERS
«. RECALLED TO AMERICA. MATTER OF CHURCH POLICY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. October 16. All the elders of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (Mormons), totalling 34, have been ordered by cablegram to return to Salt Lake City, America, by the Mariposa, which will leave Auckland on Monday. All are of military age and are subject to the American conscription law. The president, Mr Matthew Cowley, will be the only one left in New Zealand. He said that the evacuation was a matter of church policy. Within two months of the outbreak of war 600 elders were evacuated from Europe. This will be the first time for 50 years that the church in New Zealand has been left without a missionary. However, the church is well established in the Dominion, and will be organised under local supervision.
