ALARMING INCIDENT
EXPLOSION OF BOMB. THOUGHT TO BE PRACTICAL JOKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 16. An alarming explosion heard over a wide area shattered last night’s peace in .»he north end of the city half an hour after midnight, and many residents peered anxiously into the darkness, wondering if some serious form of sabotage had reached Dunedin. The explosion was caused by a giant basket bomb which was placed on the lawn in front of St. Margaret's College in Leith Street, presumably as a practical joke. Though considerable alarm was caused, there was no material damage beyond the blackening of the front door of the college and the steps leading to it. The fact that the door and steps are 10 feet from the spot where the explosion occurred gives some idea of the blast. It is suspected that students were responsible and that possibly they manufactured the bomb, as it would be difficult to purchase one of such size. The authorities at St Margaret's look upon it as a joke and have lodged no official complaint, so that the police had no comment to make when approached on the matter.
