Form worked out well when Pay Roll and Nuna finished first and second in the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. Auto Lass, Cambria, Nuna and Pay Roll were smartest to begin, Nuna and Cambria leading into the straight from Pay Roll, Transmitter, River Plate, and Route March wide out. Pay Roll made an effort at the distance, and she won nicely by a length from Nuna. Minko finished solidly to be a length and a half away third, and River Plate was fourth. Pay Roll was bred by her owner, Mr T. Newman, and is a chestnut filly by the Surveyor horse Croupier, from Zarisee, the dam of Dollar Bill, and Free Gold. Zarisee is by Baladin from Masabuka, by Chaucer. Pay Roll is trained by T. R. George at Opaki. An Easy Win. The three-year-old Beau Leon, carrying three pounds overweight to secure the services of W. J. Broughton, was made an each way favourite for the Spring Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday and he won brilliantly, his time of 2.5 being only one second outside the course record of Round Up. A good start was made and Besiege soon ran to the front from Beau Leon and Pern, who were together ahead of Mintlaw. Valmint, Royal Appellant, Winsome Lu and Our Jean. Besiege led into the straight from Beau Leon, Pern, Royal Appellant, Our Jean and Mintlaw. As soon as they commenced the run home Beau Leon went to the front and he won easily by two and a half lengths from Royal Appellant, who finished solidly to beat Besiege by a neck. Our Jean was a close fourth. Esquire again refused to gallop after passing the crossing near the mile post and took no further part in the race.
