EKETAHUNA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SOCIAL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Eketahuna Women's Institute held a social in the Anglican Schoolroom on Thursday last. The hall was tastefully decorated. After Mrs D. Fraser (president) had welcomed the visitors the meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the "Ode to Friendship.” An excellent programme was presented as follows:Mrs Horton, pianoforte solo. "Midnight Fire Alarm.” Miss A. Schultz, recitations, "The Cinema Pianist” and "The Cockney Girl at the Cinema," Mrs A. Gyde, recitation, "That Old Sweetheart of Mine.” A play, "Mary’s Dismissal,” was presented by the Institute's Drama Circle. Those taking part were Mrs Albretchtsen (Mary), Mrs Richardson (Aunt Janet, Mrs Gray (Winnie). Mrs McAlister (Ethel, Mrs Robinson (Phyllis), Mrs Simpson (Pam). A brief community sing was enjoyed, the leader being Mrs W. Curry. A competition, knitting one yard of wool on two toothpicks, was won by Miss House. The gathering was brought to a close with the serving of afternoon tea by the committee. PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held on Thursday, there being only a fair attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £2 5s lid were passed for payment. Mrs A. S. Carter wrote thanking the members fpr the Prayer Book that had been presented to her in appreciation of her services to the society. The Putara ladies were thanked for their donation of £3 12s, being the proceeds of a euchre party. Subscriptions from Mesdames C. Burton and W. E. Moss, 5s each, were acknowledged. It was reported that Nurse Tinkham, who was indisposed, was unable to attend the rooms last week. School Tenders. The Wellington Education Board has decided to remodel the Newman school and renovate the school residence at Hastwells and invites tenders in connection therewith closing at noon on Friday next, October 18.
