KOPUARANGA

$ TENNIS SEASON OPENED

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. PATRON’S 96th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Kopuarange Tennis Club, which took place in fine weather on Saturday afternoon, was regarded as the most successful function in the history of the club. The attendance of club members and supporters was swelled by many visitors from Masterton and surrounding districts. Combined with the opening ceremony was the celebration of the 96th birthday of the club’s patron, Mr G. H. Clarke, who has filled that position for many years and has been connected with the club since its inception. He was the recipient of the good wishes of all present.

An enjoyable Yankee tournament run under the direction of the secretary, Mr C. P. Jarrett, provided tennis of an entertaining standard. The final resulted in a win for Mr J. Bright (Masterton) and Mrs Eric Cottle, who beat Mr J. Rayner and Mrs C. Trass. “I wish to extend a hearty welcome to club members and outside players who have joined in our opening today,” stated the president. Mr C. C. Jackson in declaring the courts officially opened. He commented on the record attendance and expressed the hope that all would spend an enjoyable time.

"We have also gathered here today to celebrate the 96th birthday of Mr George Henry Clarke who has been patron of the club since its inception.” said Mr Jackson. “Mr Clarke has decided to dedicate the courts, which are his property, to his great-granddaugh-ter, which is a kindly gesture on his part.” Mr Jackson stated that Mr Clarke was one of the pioneer settlers of the district, and he had been associated with him with many activities in the district since 1897. Mr Clarke had left his mark on the affairs of the district, although he had been absent for the past few years. He had been connected with the school committee since its formation and besides being president of the district sports club had been connected with the engineering work of the Mauriceville County Council. Mr Jackson extended the good wishes of all present to Mr Clarke and called on him to cut a beautifully decorated cake to commemorate the occasion. "This reminds me of cutting an old camp-oven loaf.” commented Mr Clarke in cutting the cake. He was presented with a buttonhole posy by Miss Jarrett, and accorded musical honours. Mr Clarke returned thanks for the good wishes extended him. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies' committee. Mr Jackson announced that a trophy had been donated to the club by Mr Ivor Jackson. The conditions were that the cup would be held for one year by the youngest player who gained the most points during the season. A miniature cup would also be given with the trophy.
