EKETAHUNA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute held in St Cuthbert’s Hall. Mrs. D. Fraser presided over an excellent attendance of members. The proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem, the Ode to Friendship and the Prayer for Peace. After the correspondence had been dealt with the president extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. One new member (Miss Ashby) was nominated and elected. Delegates to the half-yearly Council meeting to be held in Eketahuna on October 24 received instruction on how to -vote on the remits. It was decided to hold a social on Thursday next. Final arrangements were made for the Institute’s birthday party which will be held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on November 7. Many articles were received in connection with the Makogai Island lepersappeal. The sales stall did good business. A competition for a crinoline doll (donated by Mrs Fraser) realised a substantial sum, the winner being Mrs Brookes. Mrs Martelli gave a demonstration on ambulance work, her subject being artificial respiration, bandaging a sprained ankle and head and finger bandaging. This was keenly followed by members and questions were answered by the demonstrator, who was accorded a vote of thanks. The balance sheet in connection with the concert and dance held at Kaiparoro was read and showed a profit of £ll. This amount was shared by the Institute and the Kaiparoro Patriotic Committee. The competitions for the month were won as follows:—Balaclavas (judged by Mrs Burton. Kaiparoro). Miss M. Hooper 1, Mrs Farrow 2, Mrs Sturgeon 3 (these are to be donated to the Patriotic Committee); buttonholes (judged by Miss E. House), Mrs Richardson 1, Miss Mitchell 2, Mrs J. Tolley 3; six bulbs (judged by Mrs McAnulty), Mrs C. Oliver 1. Mrs Welch 2, Mrs E. Albrechtsen 3. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Simpson and A. Rowden. The singing of the New Zealand National Anthem brought a pleasant gathering to a close.
