MARTINBOROUGH
BOWLING OPENING OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Martinborough Bowling Club opened its 1940/41 season on Saturday afternoon, there being a large attendance of visiting and local bowlers and the general public. The Municipal Band was in attendance and played selections throughout the afternoon. In declaring the season open, Mr. W. J. Knell (president) welcomed the visiting bowlers, and said that though the war was on, they felt it was better to carry on, and that he was sure, as in the days of the Armada when Drake had played his game of bowls, so would bowlers respond to the call of duty today. A large increase in membership had enabled the club to forecast. a successful season. The Rev W. F. Stent (vice-president of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre) returned thanks for the hearty welcome extended to members of the visiting clubs. Mrs Knell rolled up the first bowl, and Mrs Williamson struck the first croquet bowk amid cheers. Rinks were then arranged and an enjoyable time spent.
