HAWKE’S BAY MEETING
CHIEF EVENT TO NATIVE SONG. SPECTACULAR WIN OF PAR AVION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, October 5. A showery morning gave way 10. a beautiful spring day for the conclusion of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting. There was a large attendance, and investments for the day were up £3269 on the sum of £11.509 10s handled on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £23,433, compared with £19,381 in 1939, an increase of £4052 which should return the club a good margin. A feature of the day’s racing was a spectacular run made by the Ringmaster colt, Par Avion, to win the Juvenile Handicap. He was badly placed when the field turned for home, but he finished with great determination to win cleverly, much to the relief of his army of 1 backers who made him a short-priced favourite. Par Avion is trained at Opaki by T. R. George. Results:—

Easy Win for Native Song. The Russel Memorial at Hastings on Saturday was won easily by the Hunting Son five-year-old Native Song. He pulled hard in the lead for six furlongs and was being trailed by Lindrum and Lady Furst. Three furlongs from home Native Song was given his head and he put in a winning break on the field. Lady Furst and Lindrum were beaten soon after turning for home, and it was left to the first day’s winner, Master Cyklon to come on and take second money by a head from Aurora’s Star, whose run was again made a little too late. Lady Furst was fourth and Gay Mimic and Limbohm were best of the others. Native Song’s performance was a good one for he still had plenty in reserve after fighting for his head for more than half the journey.
Par Avion’s Good Showing. Par Avion had to put in a determined run to win the Juvenile Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday for which he was an odds-on favourite, twice as well backed as the second horse, Erin’s Court. The last-named set a fast pace for Daily Mail, Proven and High Morale. At the distance Erin’s Court .looked to have the field at his mercy as Par Avion was several lengths back, but the Ringmaster colt finished with rare determination and he won going away by nearly a length. Proven ran an improved race on his first-day showing and best of the others were Daily Mail, High Morale, Flying Spray and Siyana. Par Avion, who was second to Foreign Coin in his first start at Marton, cost 320 guineas as a yearling. He carries the same colours as Pearl of Asia and is trained by T. R. George, at Mastertons
