COASTAL GUARD MEETING OF SETTLERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr J. Martin addressed a large and representative meeting of settlers in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening for the purpose of forming a coastal guard. The meeting was most enthusiastic. Mr Martin was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Cold Snap. After a spell of fine weather the conditions changed suddenly on Tuesday, when heavy rain accompanied by a strong southerly was experienced. The temperature fell considerably with the result that the atmosphere is quite wintry. Personal. Squadron-Leader Baryy Nichol was a visitor here at the weekend. He formerly resided in this district. Mr W. Desmond, who has been in poor health, is staying at Te Kopi. Mr Alf. Grigg left here on Monday for Featherston. He proceeded to Trentham Camp today. Mrs Piwari, who has been in hospital, has returned home. Messrs A. Manihera and M. Te Whaiti, of Taihape, are visiting relatives here for a few days. The former will shortly enter camp with the Maori Battalion. Patriotic Effort. The bachelors and spinsters of the district propose holding a ball at an early date, the proceeds of which are to be given to patriotic purposes. Cheese Output. The output of cheese at the local factory at the present time is just double the output for the correspond- ■ ing period last year. Shearing Delayed. Shearing operations were to have commenced here this week but owing to the sudden change in the weather it has been deemed advisable to postpone a start till conditions improve. Lambing Percentages. The docking of lambs in this local- j ity ’is just about finished and' the ] percentages in most cases were equal to those of the previous season. How- < over, in some instances, the percent- ' ages were higher. , Euchre Tourney and Dance. j There was a large attendance at the ' euchre tourney and dance on Satur- < day evening organised by the Wo- ( men’s Institute to raise funds for the < London appeal. Prizes were won by j Mrs McKenzie (ladies) and Mr W.Taylor (men) in the euchre games. I Other prizes were also won by Mrs ' Thomas (cake), Miss Bragg (table s cover) and Mr D. Kitney (groceries). 5 The music for the dance was supplied by a local band, while the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr S. McIntosh. The produce stall, which was t well patronised, was in charge of Mrs t D. Mclntosh. The takings amounted r to approximately £24. e
