The hockey season as far as Greytown is concerned came to an end on Saturday when the local ladies’ team visited Masterton to meet Excelsior. The lattei- won by one to nil, thus putting the local team out of the running in the Kia Toa Cup knockout competition. The game, which was sternly contested throughout, was not the best exhibition given by either team this year. Ground conditions were somewhat responsible for this, the surface being bumpy and unreliable. The only goal of the match was unfortunate from the Greytown viewpoint in that although the goalie stopped the ball well out, it bounded off her stick into the net. Excelsior gave the local girls some hectic moments, particularly in the first half, but the latter staged equally exciting movements. The winners used their wing halves to much better purpose this time in holding the wing forwards in check, and this, coupled with good, work by the' Excelsior right full back, kept the Greytown ladies from scoring. At the finish the latter were playing a much steadier and more dangerous game than their opponents. The local team was not up to the standard ' of previous matches in stopping the ball and in clearing or hitting. This was due no doubt .to their inability to : get together for practice. One very outstanding and praise- ( worthy feature of this year’s play J among the Greytown ladies is that on j no occasion has any player held up play because of injuries. Such a spirit , is very commendable indeed. ‘
In view of the extraordinary amount of travelling done by the local team this year—nine games out of 16 —their success has been quite gratifying, and their goal score of 61 for and 11 against bears testimony to the general quality of their play. There is no doubt that of the four teams which ranked high in the competitions. Greytown stands a very good second. With a little luck the team might easily have been first. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for Greytown for September are as follow: Deaths 3 births 1, marriages nil. Rainfall for September. There were 12 wet days in September, the total fall being .394 points. In September last year 258 points fell, there being 11 wet days.
