CARTERTON
OBITUARY MRS JANE JONES. (“Times-Age” Special.) After an illness extending over a period of four months the death occurred yesterday at the Greytown Hospital of a very old resident of Carterton in the person of Mrs Jane Jones at the age of S 3 years. The deceased was born at Cornwall, Wales, England, and came to Nev/ Zealand with her hus--1 band many years ago. They resided in 1 Wellington and Feilding for some time ; and came on to Carterton in 1911. She was a member of the Salvation '■ Army. Her husband predeceased her nine years ago. She leaves two daughters, Mrs Woollet, of Solway, Masterton, and Mrs Stevens, of Wanganui. There are also four step-children, Mesdames Crysell and W. D. Mitchell, of Wanganui, and Messrs W. Ballinger (Carterton), and Hollis, of Pahiatua, who will have the deep sympathy of a large circle of friends in Carterton. The funeral will take place on Friday at Clareville Cemetery after a short service at Mr W. Ballinger’s residence, Holloway Street, Carterton, at 1.15 p.m. GOLF

Corlet and Mrs Goodin; Mrs Pointon and Miss Lane; Miss Hamer and Mrs Hindley; Mrs Gustofson and .Mrs R. N. Campbell. Misses Corlet will be in charge of afternoon tea. Dance at Belvedere.
The Belvedere schoolroom should be filled on Friday evening when a dance will be held, the proceeds of which are for the purpose of purchasing gifts for soldiers leaving the district. Good music and good supper will be provided and patrons are assured of a most enjoyable time.
Personal Items. Mrs W. W. Smith, of Clareville; yesterday had a fall at her residence and severely injured a shoulder. Dr. Wells was called in and it is not yet known whether the collarbone is broken. Mrs J. Lenihan, who is an inmate of Masterton Hospital, has successfully undergone an operation and is doing as well as can be expected. Mrs J. L. Martin, son of Mr and Mrs W/"Martin, headmaster at the local school, will leave tomorrow afternoon for camp. Mr Martin, who enlisted in Napier, was on the staff of the Tarawera School, Hawke’s Bay. A pleasant function took place in the commercial room of the Marquis of Normanby Hotel yesterday when several members of the Carterton Golf Club met to bid farewell to Mr lan Mackie, who is to go into camp at Trentham tomorrow. Mr G. Brown, president of the Golf Club, in an appropriate speech on behalf of the members, presented Mr Mackie with a holdall and wished him “good luck” and a safe return to Carterton. Mr J. Steele also spoke and Mr Mackie suitably replied. Fall From Power Pole. A member of the Power Board staff. Mr F. Sewell Junr., was engaged with other employees on work at the north end of the town yesterday and fell from a power pole, a distance of about 20 feet to the ground. A doctor was called, and upon examination found that no bones had been broken, but that Mr Sewell had received a bad shaking and bruises. He is at present confined to bed at his home. Soldier Farewelled. Despite the wet weather last evening the Carterton bandroom was filled when a farewell dance was given in honour of Mr lan Mackie, who will go into the Trentham Camp tomorrow. Mr T. O'Connor was M.C. During the evening, Mr H. Murrell, on behalf of Mr Mackie’s many friends, in well chosen words asked the guest of the evening to accept a well-filled money belt, and expressed the hope , that he would have the best of luck I and return safely to Carterton. Mr - Mackie returned thanks and said that he specially wished to thank the ladies’ committee. Supper was provided by the ladies. The music was provided by Miss Mary Herrick, extras being played by Misses Lola and Rewa Flopkins, E. Daysh and a lady visitor from Masterton. Cars Collide. A collision between two cars in High Street this morning resulted in i the mudguard of one vehicle being ! smashed and minor damage to the 1 other car. Funeral of Mrs Knowles. The funeral of the late Mrs Knowles j took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege being a large one. A service was held at the deceased’s late residence in Howard Street and was taken ; ' by the Rev W. F. Stent, Vicar of St < Mark’s, who afterwards conducted the ( ceremony at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were sent, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. The pallbearers were Messrs V. Welch, J. Thompson (son?-in-law), N. Udy, L. Ordish, C. Ordish > and R.
