FISHING SEASON
PROSPECTS CONSIDERED GOOD. RIVERS WELL STOCKED WITH TROUT. Indications point to the Ashing season, which will open next Tuesday as being highly successful. Waters in the Wairarapa are reported to be in good order and well stocked with trout. Although the petrol restrictions will have the effect of curtailing many anglers’ activities the fact that the Waipoua, Ruamahanga, Waiohine, and other well known fishing rivers are within easy reach of the main centres in the district will offset any serious disadvantage. Doubtless many anglers will band together and pool their petrol "V and use less cars. In fact many anglers in Masterton already intend doing so. In view of the fact that only four soldiers took advantage of the provision made last year whereby men enlisting for overseas service had a portion of their license fee refunded no provision has been made this year for such a refund. Although at the beginning of the season equinoxial gales make angling difficult, and there is always the possibility of heavy rain, conditions are at present very favourable. In the Wellington Acclimatisation district 1,500,000 fry have been liberated —1,160,000 brown and 250,000 rainbow fry. In other parts of the Wellington district reports to hand state that short rations of petrol will mean that waters in the vicinity of main centres will be heavily fished, and that there are large numbers of sizeable fish in the rivers.
