NAVY LEAGUE

1 LADIES’ AUXILIARY ( SPLENDID PATRIOTIC EFFORTS. At a meeting of the Ladies’ Auxili- > ary of the Navy League. Mrs A. Caselberg presided. Apologies for absence , were received from Mesdames O. A. • Bunny, P. H. Nathan, W. A. Michael, C. C. Jackson, J. M. James. C. Deans, S. R. Gawith. Misses Gray, J. McLaren ■ and B. Vallance. . The wool committee reported that 15 garments had been sent to Wellington on August 30 in response to an urgent appeal for socks and pullovers, and a further 213 were packed for despatch, bringing the total for the year to 1749. The food coinmittee reported that the second consignment of tinned foods for men on minesweepers overseas would be packed after the meeting. The work for the men of the minesweepers and other sea services, both in connection with the supply of warm garments and of tinned foods, was reported to be proceeding very satisfactorily, thanks to the help of members and friends of the League. The committee regretted that it was impossible to thank every helper individually, or to print a full list of the donors each month, but grateful thanks were extended to those who had helped and were continuing to help with knitting, with gifts of wool or money for the purchase of wool or food, and to those who are donating tins of food, particularly those who have promised monthly parcels, thus assuring a regular supply of goods for shipment. The secretary reported that the school membership to date was most encouraging, Solway College, St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls, the Kopuaranga and Newman schools had all maintained their good membership of last year, and the Fernridge School had enrolled all its scholars for the first time and had. therefore, gained the Union Jack which was presented to schools with a 100 per cent membership, or with over a hundred members. It was hoped to arrange for the presentation of the flag to Fernridge School within the next few weeks. Owing to pressure of work in connection with the Navy League War Council, Mr R. Darroch would not be able to pay ‘ his usual three days’ visit to Masterton this year, to give addresses on the Navy League to school children.
