PONGAROA
DROWNING ACCIDENT FALL FROM BRIDGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) A distressing fatality occurred at Pongaroa at about 10 o’clock on Saturday night when Mr Alexander Blair accidentally slipped from a bridge crossing a flooded stream at Pongaroa and was drowned. Deceased was an employee of Mr C. E. Gichard, a contractor. The body was found on Sunday on the bank of the Aohanga River, about 1J miles from the bridge. At an inquest held on Sunday evidence was given by Constable Gainey, George Newberry, a labourer of Pongaroa, and Colin Edward Gichard. The coroner, Mr S. G. H. Hogg, of Pahiatua, returned a verdict that deceased had met his death by drowning as the result of accidentally slipping into a flooded stream.
