GREYTOWN
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School committee was held last night there being present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), E. Galyer, G. Robinson, H. C. Trotman, W. G. K. Wiggins, Mrs Knell (secretary) and the headmaster (Mr S. C. Shedden). The dental nurse reported that during August there had been 101 attendances and 196 operations, and two new entrants. The headmaster reported as follows: Primary roll 300; secondary 47. Miss Askew has resumed her duties after a long illness. Miss Anker has been taken away for relieving duties. The Education Board notified that Mr H. C. Trotman had been instructed to remove the tool shed to the side of the woodwork room. The visiting committee for the month reported that minor repairs were necessary. The Education Board forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board in reference to the heating of the two open ail class rooms. It was decided to reply to the letter when further particulars had been received from the Power Board. The Department of Health notified that children coming from schools where no dental treatment was received, would now be considered, despite the fact that they had advanced higher than the primer classes. During a discussion it was revealed that out of the 347 children attending the Greytown School 100 were conveyed to school by bus. It was decided to obtain prices for a new concrete area and forward the same to the Education Board immediately. FAREWELL SOCIAL I PRESENTATION TO MISS WYETT. The St Luke’s Parish Hall was packed on Monday evening when a farewell social was tendered to Miss E. Wyett, who will leave Greytown this week to reside at Lower Hutt. During the evening the following programme, arranged by Mrs A. H. York, was rendered: Song, Miss Eccles; monologue, Miss Wiggins; song, Mrs Gold; recitations, Miss Kedclell; the League of Mothers’ Choir also sang two glees. Mrs Gold played the accompaniments and the music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Beu and Miss Betty Shedden. The statue dance was won by Misses Gray, and a signature competition by Miss M. Carter. Mr S. Shedden officiated as M.C. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) said that he regretted very much that Greytown was losing such a worthy citizen, who had during the many years spent in Greytown taken an active part in the social activities of the town. Mr Mark Maxton gave an interesting account of the great work Miss Wyett had done in the early history of St Luke’s Church. On behalf of the Maori people Mr G. Te Whaiti wished Miss Wyett continued good health and happiness in her new sphere. Mr J. F. Thompson referred to the active interest Miss Wyett had taken in practically every institution in the town. During the last war and in the present war Miss Wyett had been an active worker for the Red Cross Society. Canon Sykes presented Miss Wyett with a travelling case on behalf of the Guild and parishioners, and in doing so thanked Miss Wyett for her long service to the church. For many years she had been a member of the choir and filled the position of secretary of the Ladies’ Guild for a long period. The people of Greytown would miss her very much, continued Canon Sykes. Her faithful attendance at church in all weathers was an inspiration.
On rising to reply Miss Wyett was greeted with musical honours. She said that it was with regret that she was leaving Greytown, which held for her many dear memories. She was happy in the fact that she would be able to occasionally return to Grey* town and renew the many friendships she was leaving behind. Miss Wyett concluded by thanking them for the handsome gift. Golf. The mixed foursome postponed from last week will be played on Saturday. The draw will be made at the Club House at 1.10 p.m. Personal Items. Mr G. R. Jury, of Papawai, left yesterday on a short visit to Napier. Miss Joyce Horton and Miss Esme Nichols have returned to Nelson. Mr D. W. Adams, of the Greytown branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left Greytown on Monday and will proceed to England for training in the Fleet Air Arm. Before leaving, the manager. Mr Dewhurst, presented Mr Adams with a cigarette case, diary and pencil from the staff.
