MAURICEVILLE
COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY. MEETING HELD YESTERDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held in Masterton yesterday. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham presided. There were also present Councillors A. Forsberg, D. Bennett, A. Gray and J. H. McDonald, and the county clerk, Mr A. W. G. Hollings. Advice from Councillor C. Welch that he would not be able to continue as a councillor as he did not comply with the residential qualifications, and giving notice of his resignation was received with regret. Tribute was paid by several councillors to the services he had rendered and regret was expressed that the council was losing his services. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Councillor Welch. Councillor Welch’s resignation will result in an election to fill the cyThe treasurer submitted his report which showed a credit balance of £lll7. and accounts for £276 were passed. A considerable volume of correspondence was received. The matter of calling tenders for the Kopuaranga Stream bridge (Mauriceville town bridge) was left to the discretion of the chairman, following advice from the Public Works Department that the 1940-41 grants to the County had been reduced below the estimates which would call for a restriction of expenditure during the current year. , Various anomalies which were stated to exist in the Rural Housing Act concerning the incurring of possible liabilities by counties were contained in a lengthy circular from the New Zealand Counties’ Association. No action was taken in the matter. The chairman reported on the meeting of local bodies held in Masterton recently in connection with the forming of a Home Guard. A further meeting would be attended tomorrow. Work carried out during the past month was reported to be satisfactory, and various works were approved for the ensuing month. EUCHRE PARTY On Saturday evening the MauriceI ville District Women’s Institute held a very successful euchre party in the Mauriceville Hall. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs G. Osborne; men, Mr H. Trass Junr. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee. Personal Items. Miss G. Bonner, of Wellington, has returned home, after having been the guest of Mrs J. Baine, Mauriceville. Mr and Mrs A. Urquhuart have been visiting relatives in this district.
