BOWLING CENTRE
ACTIVITIES IN WAIRARAPA SUCCESSFUL SEASON. FEATHERSTON CLUB’S GREAT ACHIEVEMENT. "I wish to record with gratitude my appreciation of the splendid loyalty and co-operation given to myself by two members of the executive, Messrs Morton and Stent,'’ states the annual report of the president (Mr G. Hayne) of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre. "It is with deep regret that I have to record the contemplated resignation of our secretary, Mr Stent who, after six years splendid service to this district now considers that he should give way to another. Delegates are asked to use their persuasive power in an endeavour io persuade our friend to reconsider the position. "The centre was again fortunate in securing a visit from the Manawatu Centre. Sixty players headed by that popular bowling figure, Jimmy Nash, gave our centre an inspiring time. Unfortunately, bad weather prevented a return visit. We again look forward to receiving and returning a visit this coming season. The outstanding success of our centre during the past season was achieved by the Featherston Club whose members won the Champion of Champion Singles, Pairs and rink games. This is a record hard to equal and on behalf of all I offer hearty congratulations to Mr H. Rolls winner in the Champion of Champion Singles, to Messrs Davis and Deas, winners of the pairs and Messrs Davis, James, Higginson and Deas, winners of the rinks. In this connection the Centre thanks the Masterton, Park and Carterton clubs for the use of their greens.
"The annual Wairarapa New Year Tournament was again held on Masterton’s greens. This event was a splendid success and was won by a rink from Greytown, Messrs Kilgour, Brunton, Dennes and W. Higgison. The Centre offers to them its congratulations. Interest was added to the tournament by a visit from a Palmerston rink. A profit of £4 11s lid was made this year out of the tournament. The usual annual tournaments were held on the Featherston, Greytown, Park and Martinborough greens and all were outstanding successes and bringing profit to the respective clubs. "Unfortunately, the Booth Cup and the Centre Shield games were not finalised. This was partly due to wet weather and partly to Centennial celebrations in various towns causing postponements. A recommendation that the executive consider the question of giving permanent badges to Champion of Champion winners each year was deferred owing to war conditions and the matter was allowed to lapse for the time being. I am pleased to be able to record that the financial position of the Centre is satisfactory.”
