WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT NIREAHA.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

The monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday. Mrs N. Terry presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Ode and Prayer for Peace, after which members observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to Mrs J. Brookes in the recent death of her father, and also to the relatives of the late Mrs W. O’Neil. The late Mrs O'Neil was a foundation member of the institute. Mesdames George Shannon and Wilken were appointed delegates to attend the council meeting to be held in Eketahuna in October.

The institute is preparing three parcels for soldiers and has also donated 15s to the local Patriotic Committee’s parcel appeal. A bring and buy stall was held and the proceeds, 9s 6d are being handed over to the Leper Fund. The competitions resulted as follow: —Something new from something old: Mrs J. Drysdale. 1; Mrs W. Drysdale, 2; Mrs J. O'Neil, 3. Sultana cake: Mrs J. Drysdale, 1; Mrs J. O’Neil, 2; Mrs N. Terry, 3. Best bloom: Miss B. Drysdale, 1; Mrs Blewitt, 2; Mrs J. P. Petersen, 3. Members each contributed three baking powder tins of plum cake and these will be forwarded to the Air Force Relations’ Committee. A large parcel of clothing for refugees was also received. The hostesses for the occasion were Mesdames A. Golder, Grant and Drysdale. Personal. Mr A.. H. Pickering, Arapuni, was a visitor to Eketahuna’ yesterday. Mrs S. Davis, Atea, has returned to her home much benefited in health. Red Cross Appeal. The Eketahuna Sub-Branch of the Red Cross has an advertisement in this issue soliciting supplies of used blankets and quilts for the making of bandages, etc. Such donations can be left with the secretary, Mrs W. J. Henderson or Miss N. Greathead. Democratic Labour Party. A meeting of supporters of the Democratic Labour Party was held in Eketahuna last night at which it was decided to call a general meeting for the purpose of forming a branch at an early date. ____
