PERSONAL

The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, will return to Wellington tomorrow from the South Island. Lieut.-Colonel (Dr) P. C. Davie, New Plymouth, is going overseas on military service soon. The Hon R. Semple, Minister of National Service, will return to Wellington tomorrow from a visit to the South Island.

Guests yesterday and today at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, were: Messrs E. R. Tabart, P. Lister (Palmerston North), W. White, L. Fraser, E. Eden, C. Adams (Wellington). Mr R. Herron, who was due to retire on supperannuation from the position of general manager of the Wellington municipal milk department, has had his term extended for another year.

Lieut.-Commissioner’ and Mrs J. Evan Smith, territorial leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, left Wellington for Auckland today to meet the newly-appointed chief secretary and his wife, Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs W. Alex Ebbs, who are expected to arrive from the United States of America on Friday. Advice has been received by cablegram that Mr Pat Dyer, of Masterton, who arrived in England six weeks ago as a member of the R.N.Z.A.F. to finish his training, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant-pilot.-; Mr Dyer is the second son of Sergeant T. H. Dyer and Mrs Dyer, of Papakura, and formerly of Masterton. There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late Mrs J. F. Ward, which took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The Ven Archdeason E. J. Rich officiated. The pall-bearers were Messrs M. Fly, W. Darvil, J. Shaw and F. Hood. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from the staff of the W.F.C.A. Furnishing Department and the. Municipal Band.
