Dismantling of Port Bowen. Good progress is being made with the dismantling of the Port Bowen on Castlecliff beach. The superstructure, including the bridge, has been removed, and the familiar black and red funnel has been taken down. The top portions of the masts have disappeared, but the crows' nest on the foremast still stands defiantly amid a scene of wreckage. The decks are piled high with gear of every description. Two gaping holes have been made in the side of the ship and the interior fittings and ironwork are now being removed by gangs of men. A strong ramp has been erected from the beach to the freighter and a railway line has been built from the ramp to the Castlecliff siding between the harbour board offices and the storage sheds.
Dairy Produce Price. The price which was to be paid for butter and cheese for the present production year was under discussion between representatives of the industry and the Minister of Marketing, Mr Nash, said Mr W. Marshall, a member of the Dairy Industry Council, in the course of a discussion at the Economic Conference in Wellington last night. Quite definitely the industry had asked for an increase in price for the current year to meet increases in costs. Any deterioration in the dairy industry would impart a shock throughout the economic structure of the Dominion. The present price, with which Hie industry did not agree, had been fixed by the Minister in 1938. The industry's opinion was that because of the use of margarine, it would have, after the war. to accept, a substantially lower price for butter in Britain. Anything that could be done to keep costs of production on the lowest possible level should be done.
