ATTESTED RECRUITS

EXCLUDED FROM BALLOTING SYSTEM. AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT A reply to questions asked by some single men who have received certificates of enrolment in the First Division of the General Reserve under the National Service Emergency Regulations in spite of the fact that they have enlisted under the voluntary system and been passed fit,and attested for overseas service, was sought from the National Service Department in Wellington yesterday. These men fear that, although they have been accepted for service under the voluntary system, . their names will be included in the ! ballots for compulsory service. It was stated by the Department that men who have been attested for service outside New Zealand and who would otherwise be included in the First Division of the Reserve, will not be included in the ballot, and if those men have received certificates of enroment the certificates have been issued owing to the fact that the Department has not received notification from the military authorities that the men concerned have enlisted and been accepted. It is requested that men in this position should at once communicate with the Department, which will make the necessary adjustment to ensure that they are not called up by ballot. They should return their enrolment certificate at the same time.
