ART EXHIBITIONS
TWO COLLECTIONS COMING TO MASTERTON
FACSIMILE REPRODUCTIONS OF FAMOUS WORKS.
AND CENTENNIAL DISPLAY OF N.Z. PICTURES.
Residents of Masterton and district are to be favoured with the opportunity before Christmas of seeing two art exhibitions in Masterton. Arrangements regarding these were discussed at a meeting of representatives of the Borough and County councils and the Sketch Club, held last night, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presiding. The first exhibition is one of 60 framed facsimile reproductions in colour of old masters and modern paintings of famous artists, arranged in. such a way as to illustrate the various types of paintings by contrasting old masters with modern works having similar objects. The committee suggested that the public would appreciate action on the part of the authorities if it were possible for some of the original paintings in the National Art Gallery to.be included in the exhibition.' as that would stimulate interest in the exhibition and in the Art Gallery. At one time it was proposed that a specially constructed van should convey National Art Gallery paintings for exhibition in other centres, but this project was abandoned. It was suggested by the committee, however, that it might be possible to include in the contrast collection some of the pictures which would have been conveyed by van. The contrast collection would be on exhibition in Masterton for a week, it was stated, beginning on October 14. There would be no charge for admission.
The second exhibition is of a collection of 400 pictures comprising the Centennial Exhibition of New Zealand Art.
A sub-committee was appointed to make arrangements for the exhibition. It was proposed that a member of the Department concerned should advise the committee on the procedure to prepare the Municipal Hall for the display and that season tickets should be available. These matters were being taken up with the Department, which had fixed the charge at Is for adults and 3d for children. The collection was due to arrive in Masterton on November 27 and the hanging would occupy until December 2. The exhibition would open on December 3 and would close on’December 11 and would be packed ready to leave Masterton on December 17. During the whole of that period the Municipal Hall would not be available for any other purpose. .
