Mrs Wooldrige, of Paekakanki, is visiting her sister, Mrs A. J. Welch, oi Essex Street.
The Rt Hon J. G. Coates, Minister without Portfolio in the War Cabinet, arrived at Wellington from Auckland by the Limited express yesterday. The wife of the Davis Cup player, Flight-Lieutenant C. E. Malfroy, has given birth to a daughter, a London cablegram states.
The retirement will take place at the end of next month of Mr C. E. MacCormick, Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, of which he has been a judge since 1906. Mr L. Groube, of Masterton, who enlisted in the Air Force as a flight-rig-ger has received notice to report on September 13 to the Harewood Training School, Christchurch. Mr A E. Franks, of Masterton, is leaving for the South Island tonight, where he will attend the funeral of his brother, Mr George Franks, who passed away this morning after a long and painful illness. The death has occurred of Mr Frank Flipp, of Kilbirnie. Mr Flipp, who was born at Petersfield, Hampshire, in 1886, came to New Zealand in 1906, and commenced business as a butcher on his own account at Kilbirnie in 1911.
The Rt Rev H. St Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, is now reported to be making satisfactory progress toward recovery after his operation. He is still in hospital, but it is expected that he will be able to leave there in about a week’s time.
Many telegrams of congratulation have been received by Mrs A. J. Welch of Essex Street, who was eighty years of age on Friday last. Mrs Welch also was visited by many callers during the day and a family party was held in the evening.
Auckland’s two nominees for the Rhodes Scholarship are Mr Robert Pickering Newbold, aged 21, who graduated B.Sc. in 1939 and is a lecturer in organic chemistry at the university, and Mr Francis John Newhook, aged 21, who graduated B.Sc. in 1939 and is a demonstrator in geology at the Auckland University. The Hon D. Wilson, M.L.C., Leader of the Legislative Council and Associate Minister of National Service, who has been attending further meetings of local body representatives _in the Auckland province in connection with the formation of the Home Guard, will return to Wellington by the Limited express this morning.
Judge G. P. Shepherd, of Wellington, who has been connected with Native Land Court work for some considerable time, and has recently been appointed Deputy-Chief Judge to the Native Land Court, is presiding over a sitting which commenced in Masterton today, and will continue until Thursday.
After 47 years’ service with the company. Mr J. J. Kingston will retire from the position of Auckland branch manager of the South British Insurance Company, Limited, at the end of this month. Mr Kingston, who has been manager in Auckland for the past 30 years, has been for 21 years chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board.
Mr R. T. Stewart, who for the past two years has held the position of fat stock buyer in the Winton district for Thomas Borthwick and Sons. Ltd., has received notice of his transfer to Mastertoil, and will leave next month to take up his new duties. Mr Stewart has taken a keen interest in sportingactivities during his residence in Winton, being a selector and coach for the Winton football team, and a member of the Central Bowling Club. He was also treasurer and a member of the committee of the Winton District High School.
