KENNEL CLUB

ACTIVITIES IN WAIRARAPA YEAR’S EVENTS. GOOD QUALITY OF EXHIBITS. “In common with all similar bodies, the club has been considerably affected in its activities by the present state of war,” states the eighth annual report of the Wairarapa Kennel Club. “In consequence, only one ribbon parade was held during the season just closed, in addition to the annual show. The most marked effect of existing conditions was the reduction in the number of entries, especially in those coming from a distance. At the same time, there has been no falling-off in the quality of exhibits, either at the Show or the Parade. Both functions went off smoothly and agreeably, with entire satisfaction to both the club and the exhibitors.

“By way of celebration of New Zealand’s Centennial, the club and the Masterton A. and P. Association each contributed £2 2s additional prizemoney for the Grand Puppy Stakes and the Grand Challege Stakes at the annual show. These two contests both drew very good entries. Mr P. Gilchrist, who was elected a member of the committee at the last annual meeting, found himself unable to accept the position. The vacancy so caused has not been filled. Congratulations are extended to Captain J. C. Holmes, a member of the committee, on his taking up military service, though it is regretted that Captain Holme’s services to the club must be suspended meanwhile.

“The committee decided to support to the Borroughs Welcome Ltd method of inoculation against distemper, as sponsored by the North Island Sheepdog Trial Association. Several members have since used the method with good results. The club is indebted to Mr P. Gilchrist for his trouble in obtaining and furnishing information on this subject.

“The thanks of the club are due to the judges who officiated at the show. Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., and S. D. Geary, and at the Parade, Messrs E. Hall, H. K. Macintosh, and G. F. Birkett, to the numerous donors of special prizes for the show, and also to all who assisted as stewards at those fixtures, and efficiently contributed to their success. The committee wishes also to record its appreciation of the services during the year of the new hon. secretary, Mrs S. D. Geary, and of the care and enthusiasm with which she has conducted the clubs’ affairs.”

The report is to be presented for the committee, by Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas, President.
